about

My grandfather was an icon in our family who, later in life, suffered from Parkinson's and Dementia. This song was written shortly after he passed, and was later recorded out on the porch of our grandparent's house, on our grandmother's birthday in 2009.

Paul played viola for much of his life in various orchestras with his wife, Mary, who played cello beside him. Although this song is specific to Paul, I hope it lends itself to those struggling with watching loved ones becoming frail, and leaves them with a sense of ease knowing we'll all be together again.

lyrics

This world is not your home.
Heart over mind, and mind over what remains,
But in this place, your spirit is adrift,
Lost inside the body and the mind it can’t admit.

Father's calling you home…

So, it’s quarter after ten, and we cannot pretend,
That there are spiders on the floor, anymore.
And if you cannot believe things aren’t as they seem,
Then that “dog” is not just a knee.
We hate to see you leave...

Stand tall, Paul, and know your loved ones will take care
Stand tall, Paul, and know that God will meet you there
Stand tall, Paul, and feel the warmth of all your friends right by your side
Stand tall.
Father’s calling you home.

They were so strong, those hands of yours.
To hold them now, takes a little more.
To see them shake, it brings a tear.
To see your face not recognize me here,
Well, it takes a lot to stand tall.

I know it's hard to let us go,
But your Father’s begging you to “come on home,”
Home away from home.

Your legs are shaking,
Your color’s fading,
Your Home is waiting.
Home is waiting.
Your beautiful, magnificent red is a ghostly gray,
Grandfather, why can't I see your face?
You're hidden away from these earthly eyes,
So get up and stand tall.

Stand tall, Paul, your life has barely just begun.
Stand tall, Paul, you are seconds from the Son.
Stand tall, Paul, feel the warmth, feel the pride of your wife right by your side.

Crack a smile for your life.
And stand tall, Paul.
